In an era of subscriptions, paywalls, and overpriced square footage, simply existing has become rather expensive. And with so many creative new ways to charge us for things that used to be free, a library card feels a bit like a golden ticket, allowing anyone and everyone a chance to slip past the velvet ropes of a monetized world and give everyone equal access to stories, technology, and community. It’s a rare kind of public wealth these days, and few places hold as much of it as Spokane’s own library system. From digital archives and creative spaces to in-person support, tools, and opportunities for lifelong learning, the Spokane Public Library has become far more than a place to check out those banned books people are always going on and on about.

The Classics: Books, E-Media, and Reading for Every Age

Of course, the classics are still here, shelves and shelves of them, along with magazines, audiobooks, and cozy corners built for getting lost in a good story. But Spokane Public Library’s reading culture goes well beyond the physical stacks. Cardholders can borrow eBooks and digital audiobooks from anywhere, and readers of all ages are invited into the library’s ongoing Reading Club, an annual, free program that turns reading into a game, complete with prizes, themed challenges, and a reading tracker to keep kids and adults alike motivated between books.

No Subscription Required: Digital Streaming Services and Entertainment Vaults

Paying for streaming services can add up fast, and Spokane Public Library has quietly become an alternative worth knowing about. With Kanopy, cardholders can stream up to eight movies a month, from acclaimed documentaries to beloved kids’ films, pulled from a library of more than 30,000 titles. And if Kanopy doesn’t have what you’re after, Hoopla rounds things out with eight additional eBooks, audiobooks, movies, or shows per month, streamed instantly through its app. Between the two, most households could trim a streaming subscription or two without losing much of anything.

Create, Record, and Produce: The Recording Studio

The state-of-the-art Recording Studio at Spokane Public Library’s Central Library location stands as a testament to the library’s commitment to supporting creative pursuits. The studio features isolation rooms for capturing pristine vocals, a live room for band recordings, and a state-of-the-art soundboard that puts professional-grade equipment at your fingertips, all without the price tag that usually comes with professional-grade equipment. Here, musicians and podcasters can self-record, book time with an experienced audio engineer, or apply for dedicated studio sessions built around their project’s specific needs. Whether it’s a demo, a debut podcast, or a passion project years in the making, the tools to make it happen are sitting inside the library, free for booking. Tune in Free of Charge: Music Lessons

Not everyone knows this, but Spokane Public Library offers free music lessons taught by the library’s own Music Education Specialist. Guitar, bass, drums, piano, ukulele: it’s all on the table, and it’s not just for kids. Adults looking to finally pick up that instrument they’ve always wanted to learn are just as welcome to sign up.

Gather, Collaborate, and Connect: Meeting and Event Rooms

With 48 different meeting, study, event, and studio spaces available across the system, a library card doubles as a reservation for real estate, with no rental fee attached. Room capacities range from small huddles of four to full gatherings of 300, making the library a genuine option for study groups, panel discussions, community meetings, or anything in between.

Launch Your Entrepreneurial Dreams: The Business Lab and Business Resources

For entrepreneurs, Spokane Public Library functions less like a library and more like a startup incubator. Along with one of the strongest business reference collections of any public library in the country, the library is home to the Business Lab, a dedicated space for entrepreneurs to connect, complete with private meeting rooms, printers, a Bloomberg Terminal, scanners, desk space, and a call booth. Business owners can also book a one-on-one meeting with the library’s Business Librarian for personalized guidance.

Learn One-on-One: Personalized Instruction and Support

Beyond business advice, the library offers scheduled one-on-one help across a surprising range of specialties. Cardholders can book time with an archivist to dig through the Inland Northwest Special Collection, get hands-on technology help with phones, apps, or email, sit down with a Music Education Specialist for lessons or recording studio time, or get guidance navigating the Video Studio from a Video Education Specialist.

Try Before You Buy: The Library of Things

Sometimes you don’t need to own something; you just need to try it. The Library of Things lets cardholders check out gear the same way they’d check out a book: outdoor equipment, musical instruments, gardening tools and seeds, telescopes, a Discover Pass for hiking, and plenty of other miscellaneous finds. Up to two items can be checked out at a time, with loan periods generally running from two to three weeks, with plenty of time to learn you love birdwatching or that pickleball just isn’t for you, all without buying a single piece of gear.

Explore Culture Without the Cost: Museum Passes

Spokane’s cultural attractions don’t have to come out of pocket, either. Through the library’s museum pass program, cardholders can reserve free admission to local institutions like the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC) and Mobius Discovery Center, the same way they’d reserve a book or DVD. Passes are booked online, cover multiple family members per visit, and are limited to a handful per household each year, so it’s worth planning visits ahead of time. A full list of available passes can be found on the library’s site.

Maker Studios, Writing Resources, and Creative Residencies: A Home for Makers, Writers, and Dreamers

If you want to build, craft, or write, the library offers specialized physical spaces to bring your projects to life. From dedicated Maker Studios and media production spaces to comprehensive writing resources, creators have constant access to hands-on equipment. For advanced creators, the library even hosts application-based Artist Residencies at The Hive, offering local artists dedicated studio spaces in exchange for enriching community programming.

Children’s Imaginations Take Flight: Play Spaces Designed for Wonder

For the library’s youngest patrons, each branch features children’s play spaces designed around the region’s local flora and fauna. Built to fuel imagination as much as literacy, these spaces give kids a reason to see the library as a place to play, not just a place to be quiet.

Cultivating Community: Discovery Gardens and Share & Swap

Of course, true community wealth is built on sharing, and the Spokane Public Library embraces this through several unique initiatives. The Discovery Garden gives patrons a hands-on outdoor space to learn about growing food and plants, hosting workshops and demonstrations for anyone curious about gardening but lacking the land, tools, or know-how to start on their own.

The library’s Share & Swap program operates in a similar spirit, minus the soil. Community members can drop off or pick up free seeds, fabric, records, and puzzles on an ongoing basis, no transaction, trade, or purchase required. It’s a small system, but a telling one: proof that the library’s role as a place of shared resources extends well beyond its own shelves.

Save the Date: A Calendar of Events

On top of everything listed above, Spokane Public Library hosts an ongoing calendar of community events, ranging from author talks and workshops to classes and family programming. It’s worth checking the calendar regularly, since something new is almost always on the schedule.

Your Golden Ticket Awaits

The Spokane Public Library stands as a beacon of possibility in an increasingly commercialized landscape. Far from being merely a repository of books, it has evolved into a comprehensive community institution offering creative studios, professional resources, personalized instruction, cultural access, and gathering spaces that serve virtually every demographic and interest. Whether you’re an entrepreneur launching a business, a creative pursuing artistic passion, a parent seeking family-friendly activities, or simply someone looking to stretch your household budget, your library card unlocks extraordinary value and opportunity. The real question isn’t what the library offers; it’s what you’ll create, learn, and accomplish with these invaluable resources at your fingertips.
